WHAT ARE FACE SPIDER VEINS?

Facial spider veins, also known as telangiectasia or broken capillaries, refers to small, dilated blood vessels that appear near the surface of the skin, particularly on the face. These blood vessels are usually fine, red, or purple lines or patterns that can resemble spider webs or tree branches. They’re commonly found on the cheeks, nose, chin, and around the eyes.

WHAT CAUSES FACE SPIDER VEINS?

As we age, our skin loses collagen and elastin, which can weaken blood vessel walls and make them more susceptible to dilation and visibility.

Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight can weaken the walls of blood vessels, leading to the development of spider veins. This is especially true for fair-skinned individuals.

There can be a genetic predisposition to developing facial telangiectasia. If your family members have them, you might be more likely to develop them as well.

Smoking is one the most important determinant for telangiectasia. Current smokers had more than a third extra telangiectasia compared with non-smokers. Smoking leads to premature aging. The underlying mechanism on how smoking could lead to more red veins is not yet known; however, smoking induces DNA damage, elastosis, and more atrophy of the skin, which could make red veins more visible.

People with rosacea, a chronic skin condition characterized by redness, flushing, and pimples, are more prone to developing facial telangiectasia.

Laser Face Spider Veins Treatment

The ADVATx laser is a FDA-approved to treat facial spider veins. It emits a specialised light in the pulsed dye laser range that is absorbed by haemoglobin to preferentially heats up the blood vessels causing coagulation and collapse within the it.

Frequently asked questions

ADVATx laser therapy is generally well-tolerated by patients. The sensation during treatment is often described as a mild stinging or snapping feeling, similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Most practitioners will use cooling techniques, such as chilled air or a cooling gel, to minimize discomfort during the procedure.

The principle behind your laser treatment is called selective photothermolysis. This means that the laser energy is absorbed by the target (hemoglobin in the blood vessels) while minimizing damage to the surrounding skin tissue. The absorbed light energy is converted into heat, causing the blood vessels to coagulate and collapse.

While some improvement may be visible after a single treatment session, multiple sessions are usually required to achieve optimal results. The number of sessions needed depends on factors such as the size and depth of the spider veins, as well as individual skin characteristics.

After your face spider vein laser treatment, it’s essential to follow any post-care instructions provided by your healthcare provider. This may include avoiding sun exposure, using gentle skincare products, and applying sunscreen regularly to protect the treated area.

You may not be able to proceed with the Advatx laser treatment if you have the following:

  • Active infections.
  • Abnormal/suspicious moles.
  • Inflammatory/infective skin conditions.
  • Tattoos in the treatment area
  • Pregnancy/breastfeeding.
  • Bleeding disorders.
  • History of seizures triggered by light.
  • Sun exposure four weeks before and during the course of your vascular laser treatment.
