What are Skin Tags?

Skin tags aka Achorchordons are one the most easily recognizable benign skin growths. They are so common, that as much as 50% of the population have them! They begin as very tiny skin growths about a few millimeters, and grow slowly over time. Skin tags tend to be found predominantly over the neck, underarms, eyelids and groin area. Some skin tags can grow really big due to a rich blood supply feeding it.

The size of skin tags do vary. Typically, they range from 1mm to 1cm. However, giant skin tags that can grow up to 5cm may occur on the buttocks, groin and limbs.

OUR APPROACH

Skin Tag Removal in Singapore

Skin tag removal offers individuals a safe and effective solution to address unwanted growths on the skin, restoring both comfort and confidence. Skin tags, benign skin outgrowths often found in areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing, can be bothersome and aesthetically displeasing. Through a variety of proven techniques such as excision, cryotherapy, laser or cauterization, skin tags can be skilfully removed with precision and minimal discomfort. Each removal method is carefully selected based on factors such as size, location, and individual preference, ensuring optimal results tailored to the unique needs of each patient.

Why Do Skin Tags Occur?

Intermittent skin irritation appears to be a common factor. That is why skin tags frequently occurs at skin folds such as the neck and underarms.

Skin tags are more apparent as we get older, and may be an effect of skin aging. Pregnant women also have higher rates of skin tags which may be hormonally mediated.

Some studies have shown that skin tags are linked to obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes. It is therefore important to go for regular health screenings if you do develop multiple skin tags.

When should you consider Skin Tag Removal?

Skin tags are benign growths that often appear on the skin, typically in areas where the skin rubs against itself or clothing, such as the neck, armpits, groin, and eyelids. While skin tags are harmless and usually don’t require treatment, there are situations where you might consider skin tag removal:

  1. Cosmetic Concerns: If skin tags are in highly visible areas or causing cosmetic discomfort, you may choose to have them removed for aesthetic reasons.

  2. Discomfort or Irritation: Skin tags can sometimes become irritated or inflamed, especially if they rub against clothing or jewelry. If a skin tag is causing discomfort or irritation, removal may be considered.

  3. Interference with Daily Activities: Large or numerous skin tags in areas prone to friction (such as the underarms or groin) can interfere with activities like shaving or wearing tight-fitting clothing. Removing these skin tags may improve comfort and mobility.

  4. Risk of Bleeding or Infection: Skin tags can occasionally become irritated or bleed, especially if they are repeatedly rubbed or scratched. Removing them can reduce the risk of bleeding or infection.

  5. Diagnostic Purposes: In some cases, a dermatologist may recommend removing a skin tag for diagnostic purposes, especially if there is uncertainty about whether it could be a more serious skin condition.

  6. Change in Appearance: If a skin tag changes in appearance, such as becoming larger, darker, or irregularly shaped, it’s important to have it evaluated by a dermatologist. While most changes in skin tags are benign, they should be examined to rule out any underlying issues.

  7. Pain or Tenderness: While skin tags are typically painless, they can sometimes become tender or painful, especially if they are located in areas that experience friction or pressure. Removal may be considered to alleviate discomfort.

Skin tags, also known as acrochordons, are commonly found in areas where the skin folds or experiences frequent friction. Typical locations include:

  1. Neck: Especially in the creases.
  2. Armpits: Common due to constant movement and friction.
  3. Eyelids: The delicate skin around the eyes is prone to developing skin tags.
  4. Under the Breasts: Particularly in women, due to friction and moisture.
  5. Groin: In the folds of the skin.
  6. Upper Chest: Often near the collarbone.
  7. Back: Especially in areas where clothing rubs against the skin.
  8. Buttocks: In the folds and creases.

While these are the most common areas, skin tags can appear anywhere on the body. They are generally harmless but can become irritated or bothersome due to their location.

What are the complications of skin tags?

While most skin tags are harmless and do not cause complications, they can occasionally get irritated or inflamed due to accidental injury or friction with skin or jewellery. On certain circumstances, skin tags can get twisted or strangulated onto itself, cutting off blood supply with resultant pain and discomfort. Removal is necessary to reduce pain and further complications.

When choosing a method for skin tag removal, it’s important to consider the treatment options alongside the your specific circumstances, including the size and location of the skin tags, their pain tolerance, and any underlying health conditions. Consulting with a qualified healthcare professional can help determine the most appropriate treatment method.

For very large or giant skin tags, we may surgically excised the lesion and send the specimen for histological analysis.

Electrosurgery uses heat energy to burn off the skin tags. They are more suitable for small to medium skin tags.

Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the skin tags until it falls off. It’s more suitable skin tags with a narrow base.

Laser surgery helps to remove small skin tags with greater precision. Minimal scarring and faster healing.

Surgical excision is suitable for larger skin tags. This is done under local anaesthesia. Some stitches may be placed depending on the size of the skin tag.

Frequently Asked Questions About Skin Tags

No, skin tags are not contagious. They are benign growths that develop on the skin and are not caused by any infectious agent or external factor.

Yes, there is a possibility that skin tags may regrow in the same area after removal, especially if the underlying cause, such as friction or genetics, is not addressed. However, proper removal techniques performed by a healthcare professional can minimize the risk of recurrence.

While it’s not always possible to prevent skin tags, minimizing friction and irritation to the skin, maintaining a healthy weight, and practicing good skincare habits may help reduce their occurrence. Additionally, wearing loose-fitting clothing and avoiding excessive jewelry or accessories in areas prone to skin tags may be helpful.

While some people may attempt to remove skin tags at home using over-the-counter remedies or tying them off with thread, it’s generally safer and more effective to have them removed by a healthcare professional. DIY removal methods can increase the risk of infection, scarring, and other complications.

After the procedure, small skin tags heal within a week. For larger skin tags, it may take 10-14 days for healing to take place.

Depending on the size of the skin tags, we may use either numbing cream or a local anaesthetic. The procedure itself is almost painless.

As with most procedures, the risk of bleeding, infection, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, scarring and recurrence do exists, although mild in most cases. A careful post procedural skin care routine and avoiding activities that may increase skin contamination is encouraged.
