About Your Skin

The skin is the largest organ in the human body. A dynamic organ where new skin cells are constantly being renewed, and old skin cells shed off, it has many vital functions. It acts as a barrier against environmental pollutants, dehydration, ultraviolet radiation and infections.

The skin also regulates body temperature by releasing sweat and increasing or decreasing blood flow where needed. A healthy skin plays an important role in the immune system to fight bacteria and viruses that are ever present in our immediate environment. The skin also helps in the synthesis of Vitamin D, which keeps our bones strong and healthy.

Air Pollution and Your Skin

We are well aware that air pollution can affect health. Air pollution from traffic, haze, industrial chemicals and smoking are prevalent in highly urbanized societies such as Hong Kong, Beijing and Singapore. Air pollution is associated with lung and heart diseases, and has serious health implications and may be fatal in some instances.

Recent scientific evidence has emerged that air pollution carrying toxic substances leads to skin damage. Air pollution from urban areas, includes numerous tiny particles known as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

A recent study in China found that traffic related air pollutions contributes to premature aging and skin pigmentation.1 They discovered that chronic exposure to particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide increases age spots by 25%, even when there is a relatively small increase in the air pollution index.

Another study of the impact of urban pollution on skin quality revealed an increase in oil (sebum) excretion, eczema and hives in the affected population.2 Air pollution may lead to clogged pores and recurrent acne eruption, and increase the frequency of itchy skin conditions such as eczema and hives.

It is possible that these air pollutants causes skin irritation by triggering off a cascade of events that leads to inflammation and oxidative stress within the skin cells. Chronic exposure to air pollutants leads to chronic skin inflammation which ultimately manifest as acne, premature skin aging and skin pigmentation.

How can I Protect My Skin

A healthy skin is defined as one with a clean & strong protective skin barrier. Daily cleansing is recommended but some products may cause more disruption to our precious skin barrier. Facial scrubs and harsh soaps can strip the skin of its essential oils and moisture, exposing the skin to air pollutants. We recommend using a gentle cleanser to maintain clean and healthy skin.

Moisturizing your skin daily is essential to repair the skin barrier, thus balancing and restoring skin health. A regular use of a physical sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide helps deflect the damaging effects of ultra-violet radiation.

However, dead skin cells, clogged pores and impurities trapped within the skin may be difficult to remove by daily skin care regime alone. In addition, the build up of free radicals and oxidative stress causes skin to lose collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. We recommend the Hydra Plus Facial treatment for deep facial cleansing and skin rejuvenation.
