Dark Eye Circles Removal
Dark eye circles removal depends on the underlying cause. Dark eye circles refers to an appearance, most commonly on the lower eyelids, that resemble a a darkening of the skin that is more obvious under certain lighting conditions. The human eye views an object as radiant when light bounces off from a smooth surface. This appearance can be distorted from irregularities on the skin surface and/or colour changes on the skin. Bearing in mind the varied causes of dark eye circles, the correct treatment will thus lead to better cosmetic results.
Causes of Dark Eye Circles
1. Pigmentation Around The Eyes
Dark eye circles that are attributed to the build up of melanin within the skin is common in the Asian population. Individuals with a darker skin tone, most notably skin phototype III to VI have an increased risk of pigmentation, whether genetically predisposed, or triggered by external or internal factors.
Repetitive rubbing under the eyes will lead to skin irritation and consequently Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH). Post-inflammatory hyerpigmentation may be also triggered by atopic eczema, skin irritation caused by allergy to skincare products and excessive ultraviolet light exposure.
2. Structural Changes Around The Eyes
Over time, age-related changes can be seen around the eye region. The loss of collagen and elastin within the skin will lead to skin laxity and wrinkles. In addition, deeper structures such as the fat, ligaments and bone gradually weakens with age, giving rise to the tear trough deformity. All these changes creates a shadowing effect, making dark eye circles more apparent.
3. Puffy Eyelids
Individuals with puffy eyelids secondary to water retention tend to notice that it gets worse in the mornings and especially after a salty meal. How can you tell if your puffy eyelids are due to water retention? Easy. Puff eyelids will remain present when looking downwards, and does not change much when gazing upwards.
Other medical causes of puffy eyelids include Hypothyroidism, Chronic eczema and allergic skin conditions around the eyes.
4. Skin Thinning
Another common cause of dark eye circles is due to skin thinning, making the underlying blood vessels more visible. This produces a violent discolouration, mostly located at the inner aspect of the lower eyelids.
Dark Eye Circles Removal Treatments
A number of treatment options exists to improve the appearance of dark eye circles. Dark eye circles removal treatments must take into account the multiple factors involved, and therefore a holistic and combination approach is needed to achieve the best results.
There are various over the counter products that claim to remove dark eye circles. Topical retinoic acid has been clinically proven to increase skin thickness, reduce wrinkles and photo-damaged skin. If pigmentation is the main factor relating to your dark eye circles, lightening creams that contain ingredients such as hydroquinone, kojic acid, niacinamide and arbutin will be of much benefit.
The Q-switched laser is an effective treatment for pigmentation removal and stimulating collagen synthesis. Lasers work by selectively breaking down the melanin at the dermal layer of the skin. This is associated with almost no downtime and is safe in all skin types. Moreover, the Genesis Laser, a quasi-long Nd:YAG laser is able to stimulate deep collagen production, thereby increasing skin thickness, tightening and reducing wrinkles at the same time.
The use of hyaluronic acid fillers to restore volume and fill the tear trough hollow is an effective treatment with good results. A 'soft' hyaluronic acid filler is carefully placed to fill the defect, and results are obvious after the procedure. There is minimal downtime, but you may expect mild discomfort, bruising and swelling post procedure.
4. Other procedures
Although chemical peels have been used extensively to rejuvenate other areas of the skin, care must be taken especially under the eyes. This is because skin under the eyes is more sensitive, and of thinner layer. Only superficial chemical peels should be used in selected cases.
In cases of severe skin laxity and excess fat protrusion, surgery may be considered. Fat transplant may perhaps be more suitable where the dark eye circles are due to skin thinning and blood vessels are more visible.
